ExxonMobil Marine Fuels & Lubricants Launches Mobilgard™ 5100

ExxonMobil Marine Fuels & Lubricants has launched Mobilgard™ 5100, a specially formulated cylinder oil designed to mitigate the effects of cold corrosion in new design two-stroke marine engines operating on heavy fuel oil. Mobilgard 5100 joins Mobilgard™ 560 VS and Mobilgard™ 570 as the latest addition to ExxonMobil’s range of world class cylinder oils, with each product specifically engineered to help ship operators increase vessel reliability and reduce operating costs.

ExxonMobil created Mobilgard™ 5100, a 100 BN cylinder oil, working in close collaboration with leading marine engine builders. It has been formulated to address the problem of cold corrosion which occurs when the engine’s cylinders operate at conditions below the acid dew point, creating the potential to cause significant liner wear.

“Many ship operators are facing poor cylinder liner life due to cold corrosion in both new fuel-efficient engines and earlier designs that have been fuel optimised for part load operation,” said Aaron Cobb, director, ExxonMobil Marine Fuels & Lubricants. “We developed Mobilgard 5100 using an advanced, scientifically engineered ‘balanced formulation approach’ that leverages ExxonMobil’s leading technology and application expertise. Mobilgard 5100 delivers exceptional acid neutralisation performance, deposit control and oxidation stability to help mitigate cold corrosion, optimise feed rates and, ultimately, control costs.”

The introduction of Mobilgard 5100 follows ExxonMobil’s recent upgrade of its comprehensive two-stroke engine condition monitoring programme, MobilGard™ Cylinder Condition Monitoring (CCM). Leading engine builders, including MDT, now advocate using scrape down oil analysis, which is part of the MobilGard CCM programme, to support marine operators with new or modified engines. The new MobilGard™ CCM offers operators and owners quick and easy comparisons of on-board scrape down oil samples against ExxonMobil’s database of nearly 100,000 test results, helping marine operators to enhance protection and realise further cost and efficiency savings.
