Contrary to the beliefs of some industry pundits when the dexos™ program began, General Motors continues to add oils to its list of approved dexos™ oils. When we reported last in March 2013, the total number of dexos1™ oils on the approved oils list was 105 and the total number of dexos2™ oils was 75. There are now 224 dexos1™ oils and 96 dexos2™ oils presently listed.
The official GM lists include dexos1™ oils, specifically designed to meet the needs of GM gasoline engines, and dexos2™ oils, specifically designed to meet the needs of GM’s light-duty diesel engines. dexos2™ is also the recommended service fill oil for European gasoline engines.
Jo Lynne Parsons, dexos™ Project Manager at the Center for Quality Assurance, which administers the program for GM, told OEM/Lube News "The number of dexos™ products offered continues to increase, and there are currently over 300 dexos™ licensed products. The global supply of dexos™ continues to expand as more marketers join the program, and the future supply of dexos™ is secure with the majority of lubricant suppliers exercising an early extension of their dexos™ licenses".
Other enhancements have also occurred behind the scenes in the dexos™ program over the last year, added Ms. Parsons. “Specifically, the licensing process has been simplified by decreasing paperwork and reducing the time to license. With consumers and installers becoming more aware of General Motors’ engine oil program, the Licensee website (www.CenterForQA.com/dexos) was improved to manage the amount of traffic and enhance the user friendliness" said Parsons. OEM/Lube News also learned that there are a number of private label products that have been issued license numbers and will appear on the website in the next update.
