Jiffy Lube Continues as Largest US Fast Oil Change Chain

National Oil & Lube News has published a list of the top 54 US Fast Lube chains operating in 2013 in its March 2013 issue. Leading the list as number 1 is Jiffy Lube with 1,962 stores, all franchised. A distant second is Valvoline Instant Oil Change, with 896 stores of which 636 are franchised and 260 are independent/company owned. Pennzoil 10-Minute Oil Change follows at the number 3 position with 750 stores, all independently owned. The aforementioned top three chains in the list have remain unchanged in the rankings for the last 10 years. Kwik Kar (393 stores) and Valvoline Express Care (336 stores) follow at number 4 and number 5. Rounding out the top 10 largest chains in the rankings are, in order, Mobil 1 Lube Express (327 stores), Havoline xpress lube (300 stores), Express Oil Change & Service Center (195 stores), Phillips 66 (186 stores), and Grease Monkey (180 stores).

The fast lube chains on this year's list of the top 54 operate a total of 6,799 facilities of which 3,039 are franchised and 3,760 are.independent/company owned.

According to NOLN, the total number of U.S. fast lubes reached 17,063, up 1,058 stores from a year ago. The largest percentage growth company was New York-based Grease Lightning, increasing 161 percent and now number 17 on the list with 47 stores and plans to open 23 more by the end of this year.

In this article, NOLN also lists the "Top 57 Oil Chains Plus Chains" whose activities other than oil changes generate most of its revenues. Within this list, Goodyear Tire & Service Network Outlets topped all oil change lists with 2,423 U.S. stores, all independent/company owned. The remainder of the top five in this category included TCB Retail Group (2,400 stores, of which 1,400 are franchised and 1,000 are.independent/company owned), Wal-Mart Tire and Lube Express (2,400 stores, of which all are independent/company ownedt), Bridgestone Retail Operations (2,220 stores, of which all are independent/company owned, and Aamco Transmissions & Total Car Care (900 stores, of which 865 are franchised and 35 are.independent/company owned. TBC Retail Group does business as Tire Kingdom, NTB (National Tire and Battery), Merchant’s Tire and Auto Centers, Big O Tires and Midas Auto Service Experts. Bridgestone Retail Operations does business as Firestone Complete Auto Care, Tires Plus, Expert Tire and Wheel Works.

NOLN makes a special note that a fast lube "chain" is any six or more fast lube facilities owned by the same company/individual/business entity and/or operated under the same or similar signage. NOLN goes on to state that frequently independent lube operations that might own six or more of these branded facilities, to avoid double counting these shops, are grouped into a separate listing called "Associated Lube Chains".

North Florida Lubes tops the “Associated Chains” list of independent operators with 66 Havoline xpress lube facilities, followed by Pioneer Quick Lube with 26 Pennzoil 10-Minute Oil Change facilities; Fast Change Lube and Oil with 23 Pennzoil 10-Minute Oil Change facilities; Automasters of Asheboro with 16 Valvoline Express Care facilities; Express Automotive Group with 11 Havoline xpress lube, four Texas Oil Express and one Kwik Kar facilities; and Speed Lube 10-Minute Oil Change with 16 Pennzoil 10-Minute Oil Change facilities.

NOLN also lists the top 10 Truck Lube Chains ranked by number of facilities. TA Maintenance Shops tops the list with 237 facilities, followed by Petro Lube (owned by TA) with 74 facilities, Speedco with 51 facilities, Wingfoot Truck Care with 50 facilities and Bosselman dba Boss truck shops with 45 facilities.

The study article closes by listing the top International Fast Lube Chains ranked by number of facilities. Kwik-Fit, UK/Netherlands tops this list with 750 facilities, followed by Auto-Teile-Unger (ATU), Germany with 600 facilities, Speedy, France/Hungary/Turkey with 579 facilities, Norauto, France/Europe with 383 facilities, and Feu Vert, France with 330 facilities rounding out the top five.

The lists are all as of 2/28/13.

Using the average car count, ticket average and days open per year figures from the 2012 Fast Lube Operations Survey, NOLN estimates industry sales will be approximately $9.8 billion this year.
