The National Oil & Lube News has issued its Oil Change-Plus Survey, which focuses on the study of the oil change-plus industry. These facilities are those that provide oil changes, but they are not the primary business. Examples of such locations include full-service auto care centers, lube and tire stores, tune-up shops, repair shops, muffler shops, etc. The study is similar to the Fast Lube Operator Survey, conducted each September by NOLN.
A few of their findings are as follows:
- While 26% of fast lube facilities are independently owned (74% are franchise facilities), 64% of oil change plus facilities are independently owned (only 36% are franhise facilities).
- Price of an oil change with 5 quarts of conventional at a fast lube in 2016 is $41.18, while the same at an oil change-plus facility is $33.06.
- Average ticket total for a fast lube facility is $71.36, while that of a oil change-plus facility is $155.89.
- Overall breakdown of motor oil sales: Conventional (33%), Semi-synthetic (36%), Full synthetic (24%).
- Overall breakdown of motor oil sales by weight/grade: 0W-16 (0%), 0W-20 (17%), 5W-20 (23%), 5W-30 (38%), 10W-30 (3%), 5W-40 (17%), 15W-40 (3%).
Survey data was gathered from questionnaires, via phone interviews and mailed directly to operators. The responses for the 2016 Oil Change-Plus Survey account for 4,574 facilities and include facilities operating in all 50 states.
