Cummins Updates Lists of Registered CES Oils

In May 1998, Cummins created an oil registration process to approve and list all engine oils to be used in Cummins engines.  Since 1998, Cummins has become a global company, and the earlier process was specifically tailored for the North American market making it inadequate to handle oils that are manufactured around the world.

On June 1, 2014, Cummins announced its intention to temporarily stop oil registrations for CES 20074, CES 20075, CES 20076, CES 20077, CES 20078 and CES 20081.

To meet this global need, a new process was developed to ensure Cummins' customers around the world will be able to procure oils meeting Cummins Engineering Specifications.  The new process requires oil companies to provide in depth data and an oil sample to be analyzed in order to prove that they meet Cummins Engineering Specifications. Once the data has been reviewed and compliance is validated, the oil company receives a registration agreement from Cummins that allows them to claim that they meet Cummins' specifications.

After restarting its Oil Registration process last year for CES 20074, CES 20075, CES 20076, CES 20077, CES 20078 and CES 20081. CES 20085 was also added. Cummins in the fall of 2015 then issued its initial lists of registered motor oils meeting these Cummins Engineering Standards.

Cummins has since revised these lists, adding additional oils to the lists.  The recently revised CES Registered Oils Lists issued by Cummins are as follows:

This specification describes the requirements for a premium medium ash quality engine oil used in specified Cummins natural gas engines.

Click here to view the full list of registered CES 20075 oils.
This specification describes the requirements of engine oils used in Cummins mid-range engines at locations where oils meeting the requirements of API CF-4/SG, CG-4/SH, CES 20071 and CES 20072 are not readily available.  Cummins is not accepting registration for this, but offers a Valvoline product if a situation mandates its use.

This specification describes the requirements for API CF-4 premium quality engine oils for use in Cummins engines at Cummins specified maintenance interval recommendations.

This specification describes the requirements for API CF-4 premium quality engine oils for use in Cummins engines at Cummins extended maintenance interval recommendations. This oil is intended for use when extended oil drain intervals are expected and oils in accordance with CES 20076 are not preferred by the customer.

This specification describes the requirements for API CF-4 premium quality engine oils for use in Cummins engines equipped with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR).

This specification describes the requirements for API CF-4 premium quality engine oils for use in Cummins engines equipped with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and exhaust aftertreatment.

This specification describes the requirements for a premium medium high ash quality engine oil used in specified Cummins natural gas engines at Cummins recommended maintenance intervals.

Cummins has established new standard CES 20086 for the new API CK-4 diesel engine oils and CES 20087 for the API FA-4 diesel engine oils. See story 'New Cummins CES 20086 and CES 20087 Coming' in this issue of the OEM/Lube News.

Ryan Denton, Lubricant Technical Specialist, Cummins, told OEM/Lube News "We plan to publish our CES 20086 and CES 20087 within the next month and begin the registration process shortly after publication".

An extra part of this process now includes audits of products to assure that the quality is equal to the submitted samples used for registration.  These samples are taken randomly by Cummins personnel and submitted to the laboratory in Columbus, IN.  If they do not pass, discussions are arranged with the oil company to determine the cause and remedy.  If these discussions do not produce a remedy, the oil loses its registration and is taken off the list of registered oils.
