JX Holdings to Acquire TonenGeneral
Japan's largest oil refiner, JX Holdings, announced last Thursday that it plans to take over TonenGeneral Sekiyu, Japan's third-largest oil refiner, forming a giant with combined sales of 14.3 trillion yen (US$116 billion). This follows Idemitsu Kosan's November 12 announcement that it agreed to merge with Showa Shell Sekiyu K.K., creating the second-largest Japanese crude oil refiner, after JX Holdings.

ExxonMobil Opens New Office and Appoints New Lubricants Distributor Centlube in South Africa
ExxonMobil has opened a new office and appointed a new lubricants distributor, Centlube, in South Africa. The new Cape Town branch is the first dedicated ExxonMobil lubricants office to open in South Africa since 2005. Centlube now distributes ExxonMobils lubrication solutions for passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and industrial equipment.

Shell to Expand Alpha Olefins Production at Geismar Chemical Plant
Shell Chemical last Monday announced the final investment decision to increase Alpha Olefins (AO) production at its chemical manufacturing site in Geismar, Louisiana, making the site the largest AO producer in the world. Shell will construct a fourth AO unit, adding 425,000 tons of capacity.

Sainte-Marie, Québec, Canada-based Groupe Filgo and Montreal, Canada-based Sonic, a division of La Coop fédérée, announced that they have signed an agreement for the purpose of merging their activities for the distribution of energy products.
