Transport Topics has issued its 2013 list of the 100 largest Light & Medium Truck Fleets in North America.  This new first-year list is in addition to their annual lists of the 100 largest for-hire trucking fleets and the 100 largest private trucking fleets in North America.

Leading this list are UPS Inc., AT&T, FedEx Corp., PepsiCo Inc., Comcast Corp., Verizon Communications, Waste Management Inc., Republic Services, CenturyLink Inc. and Quanta Services as the top ten companies.

Ranked by total number of trucks, the largest companies are in the Telecommunications, Package/Courier, Utility Services, Food and Beverage, Construction/Building Materials and Environmental/Waste Services industries.

Ranked by total number of companies on the list, Utility Services, Construction/Building Materials, Food and Beverage, Telecommunications, Energy Services top the list.

In total, the number of motorized vehicles represents an enormous amount. The larger companies operate over 50,800 trucks (total, including vans and pickups).  Atlanta-based UPS, for example operates 85,922 straight trucks, while Dallas-based AT&T operates 60,532 total trucks, of which 16,766 are straight trucks and 43,766 are vans and pickups  ...... that's a lot of motor oil and other automotive lubricants consumed annually.

The list also shows which fleets do their own in-house maintenance and which are outsourced and whether its equipment is gasoline, diesel or natural gas fueled, or hybrid or electric.

Data for the Light & Medium Truck Top 100 Fleets are derived from interviews with fleet managers, company documents and other sources, including reports published by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Transport Topics publishes the Transport Topics 100 in order to accurately document the size and scope of the largest trucking operations and provide analysis of the trends shaping the industry.
