PETRONAS Signs New Genuine Oil Supply Deal with Perodua

Automobile manufacturer Perodua Sales Sdn Bhd and PETRONAS Lubricants Marketing Sdn Bhd, a unit of PETRONAS Dagangan Bhd, inked a RM355 (US$85.5) million five year deal for PETRONAS to supply 17 million litres of engine oil to Perodua, Malaysia's largest automobile manufacturer.

Perodua and PETRONAS have an existing engine oil partnership that has been in place since 2003. This new quantity represents an increase of 21% over the previous contract.

“Our partnership with Petronas has been very fruitful as they offer one of the best engine lubricants both domestically and globally,” Perodua Sales managing director Dr Zahari Husin said in a statement.

Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sendirian Berhad, abbreviated to Perodua, having started operations in 1994, is a joint venture owned by UMW Corporation Sdn Bhd 38%, MBM Resources Berhad 20%, Daihatsu Motor Co. Ltd 20%, PNB Equity Resource Corporation Sdn Berhad 10%, Daihatsu (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd 5%, Mitsui & Co. Ltd 4.2% and Mitsui & Co. (Asia Pacific) Pte Ltd 2.8%.

The contract renewal ceremony at Perodua Sentral also saw the launch of a higher grade engine oil (API SM, from SL) that will not only be available at Perodua service centres, but also at independent workshops and retail outlets. This is to capture the out-of-warranty Perodua owners who no longer bring their cars back to official service centres according to the company.

Perodua explained that the product isn’t merely a rebranded off-the-shelf PETRONAS Syntium engine oil, but is designed to Daihatsu Motor Corp’s standards, formulated by PETRONAS. Pricing of the semi-synthetic oil will be announced at a later date.

Perodua says that the new engine oil, which will be available the beginning of September, is designed with improved oxidation resistance, higher protection against carbon deposits, better wear protection and increased performance over the oil service life, which is 10,000 km or six months.

Zahari said that Perodua targets an intake of two million vehicles this year at its 189 service centres nationwide. This is an increase of 40,000 intakes from the 1.96 million intakes recorded in 2015.
